Onion Sauce.

Ingredients

Ingredients mentioned below use standard measuring cups and spoons.

 

500g pack of beef meatballs

1 tablespoon crushed ginger

3 medium-sized onions sliced fine

2 tablespoons of honey

1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce 

1 teaspoon of soy sauce

1 tablespoon of freshly ground pepper

1/2 cup water 

Salt to season(use very sparingly as soy and oyster/hoisin sauce do have a high level of sodium)

3 tablespoons of oil

 

Method.

30 minutes before making the recipe, leave the frozen meatballs in a bowl of water to reach room temperature.

 

Place a large frying pan over low-medium fire and pour in the oil(3 tbsp). Add the ginger(1 tbsp)to the oil and saute for 2 minutes.

 

Add the onions (3 medium, sliced fine) and cook until they turn soft.

 

Add the meatballs to the pan and shallow fry them for 3-5 minutes, constantly move the meatballs and onions so they evenly fry on all sides.

 

Then add in the honey (2 tbsp), Hoisin sauce (1 tbsp) and Soy sauce (1tsp), cook over low-medium fire for 3 minutes, taste and season with salt if necessary, you will need to be careful with the amount of salt you use as soy and hoisin sauce do have quite a bit of sodium in them.

 

Pour in the water (1/2 cup) reduce fire to low and slow simmer for 2-3 minutes.

 

Add the pepper (1 tbsp), mix well and continue to slow simmer for 15-25 minutes or until all the liquid evaporates and the onions caramelize leaving a thick sauce covering the meatballs.
