Lunu miri, the traditional Sri Lankan sambol made with enough chilli, onions and Maldive fish chips, it’s spicy red and the best condiment for a plate fo kiribath.

Apologies for the long break, I figured with all the year-end celebration happening, the last thing you’ll be doing is, searching for recipes, so I used this time to streamline my blog work schedule for the coming year.

I hope you’ve made your new year resolutions and manage to stick to them, my personal ones are to work more on the blog and concentrate on growth.

It’s not the easiest task, especially when two of my kids are sitting for major exams(when will it ever end!)meaning I’ll be dead on my feet most days but try I will.

Enough of me, now tell me yours, have you planned any goals for the coming year?

If you’ve planned to start something big this year, I’ll encourage you to do it, just don’t waste time overthinking, this can really be a drain on your creativity, my advice?

Just do it and see where it leads you.

So my goals start with today’s recipe post. and it’s the beginning of a month-long theme of BREAKFAST!

I find Breakfast to be the hardest to organize, most mornings, even as breakfast is being served, I’m wondering about what to make the next day.

I also seem to have a problem of choosing between sweet and savory dishes because the kids want sweet and the husband wants spicy.

This, my friend, is the reason for my Breakfast theme for January, by having a preplanned month-long menu on hand, I hope to solve yours and my problem of coming up with new dishes every day.

I really hope these morning meal ideas will help you on the long run and saves you time and energy, even if you’re not familiar with some, I hope you’ll give them a try.

First, let me explain to you of how a proper Sri Lankan breakfast looks like, usually it’s spicy, includes two to three dishes(sometimes a few more but let’s just stick to a safe number here, I don’t want to scare you before we even start).

The main breakfast dish would always include three key ingredients, it’s a sort of mix and match where rice, flour and coconut is used to make the main dish accompanied by spicy sambol, a meat curry and a milk curry.

Sometimes a bottle of syrupy palm sugar accompanies the meal for the kids and anyone who wants to end breakfast on a sweet note.

Yes, morning meal of a typical Sri Lankan home can be heavy(this actually helps you not to snack between meals)but you can never say that it’s bland or boring, try some of these recipes, be adventurous, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to have your taste buds woken up so early in the morning.

What the Month long breakfast ideas would include.

As I mentioned above, there will be a few Sri Lankan dishes along with baked, sweet, savory, breakfast dishes.

LUNUMIRIS( A SPICY CONDIMENT).

To kick off the month-long Breakfast theme, I’m introducing, the Sri Lankan Lunumiris.

What is Lunumiris?

It’s basically a sambol and an essential condiment for a few of our Srilankan breakfasts. This one’s a real spicy folks but that’s a good thing. I promise.

What is Maldive fish? what If I can’t find it in my local store?

It’s a type of dried, cured fish that you’ll find in a prepackaged, coarsely powdered form, it’s basically a natural flavor enhancer, think Miso and Ajinomoto when you wonder how it tastes, can’t be explained but the taste is unique enough that you’ll recognize it in any dish you’ve added it to.

If you can’t find Maldive fish then just go with the same recipe but with a slight increase on the lime juice but not too much.

How can I use Lunumiris for my own Breakfast dishes?

Kiribath(milk rice), hoppers, pol roti, Pittu which are some of the breakfast dishes you’ll find Lunumiris as a side dish.

I’m lazy, I don’t want to spend so much time in the kitchen, what is the easiest Breakfast dish I can make with Lunumiris?

Toasted bread with butter and a thin layer of lunumiris makes a perfect Breakfast on the go.

Ingredients

Ingredients mentioned below use standard measuring cups and spoons.

3 tablespoons of dry chilli flecks

3 large Onions

1 and 1/2 tablespoon of Maldive fish

1 lime juice

salt to taste

Notes-You can use a Mortar and pestle to crush all the ingredients, if you use your blender, make sure to wash it well with warm water.

Method

Slice the onions coarsely, include the chillies, Maldive fish and blitz or grind them to a pulp-like consistency, leaving out a few random onion slices.

Scoop out the mixture into a bowl, squeeze the lime juice and mix. add salt to taste.

Hi Nini, Thank you for sending me this message. glad you liked the bitter gourd sambol, though the sambol looks easy, quite a few mess it up by burning the bitter gourd as they fry. so if you managed to get it right the first time, congrats! Hope you enjoy making the food I've done on the blog. I didn't know that but it makes sense that there is a similarity in name and ingredient when you think how close the two islands are located.
