Crispy lightly battered chicken and chunks of pineapple in a sweet and lightly spiced sauce makes this amazing Asian chicken recipe addictive.

The tart taste to this homemade restaurant-style chicken dish is added by including pineapple pieces.

What to serve with chicken in sweet and sour sauce.

  • Serve with ghee rice, fried rice and make it a lunch you can put together within an hour.
  • Serve with vegetable noodles or with some cooked spaghetti, letting the sauce in the sweet and sour chicken coat the noodle as well.
  • Fill burger buns or hot dog buns with a few extra ingredients(cucumber, fries) to add crunch.

Workflow to make the sweet and sour chicken recipe.

  1. Have all the ingredients and utensils ready to make the chicken and pineapple recipe. This would help you go through each of the steps with ease.
  2. Stir-fry whatever extra ingredients(beans, bell peppers, snap peas, broccoli) you want to add to the sweet-sour chicken. Set aside.
    I decided to use only pineapples and onions since my kids avoid eating the bell peppers.
  3. Make the sweet and sour sauce and set aside.
  4. Coat the chicken in cornflour, egg, flour, and deep fry. Set aside.
  5. Warm the sauce and then combine all ingredients.

How to make this chicken in sweet and sauce healthier.

Here are a few ways you can make this recipe a little healthier as per your food restrictions.

  • Substitute sugar with honey.
  • Use a low sodium soy sauce.
  • Instead of coating the chicken pieces in two types of flour(cornflour and flour) and egg, simply shallow fry or use the air fryer to fry the chicken cubes without coating them.

Why I opted to coat the chicken in flour and eggs.

This allows me to cut the chicken into smaller pieces, so coating them in flour and eggs will actually double the size as the chicken is fried.

Helps when you have to feed a crowd at a party or a large family.

Utensils and appliances needed.
Chopping board and knife
Medium-sized bowl to cook the pineapple and later to make the sauce.
Plate or zip lock bag to coat chicken with cornflour
2 bowls (for beaten egg and flour).
A pan to deep fry the chicken pieces.
Plate with paper towels.

How to make sweet and sour chicken

To make the sweet and sour sauce

3 tablespoons of oil

1 and 1/4 cups of pineapple cubes

2 medium-sized onion sliced fine

1/4 cup sugar(can add more later if you want more sweetness)

1/2 a cup white vinegar(any type of white vinegar would do)

3 tablespoons of light soy sauce

1 tablespoon of minced garlic

1/3 cup ketchup(also known as tomato sauce)

1/2 cup water or use the canned Pineapple juice

4 tablespoons of water to mix cornstarch

1 tablespoon of cornstarch

To make the crispy chicken pieces

700g chicken breast or boneless chicken cut into 1 inch cubes

1/2 a cup corn flour

2 eggs beaten

1/2 a cup of regular flour

1/4 teaspoon of salt

Method

How to cook the Pineapple or extra vegetables to make the sweet-sour chicken.

If you are using fresh Pineapple then clean and cut them into 1″ inch pieces.

If you are using canned Pineapple
, drain the pineapple chunks to a bowl and save the juice to cook the sweet-sour sauce.

Slice the onion thin. If you want to add bell peppers for crunch and color then slice one as well.

Place a pan over medium fire and pour in oil(3 tbs) to the pan.

Add the Pineapple cubes(1 and 1/4 cup), onions sliced(2 medium) to the pan, and cook them over low-medium heat until the onions turn soft.

Once the Pineapple and onions are soft add them to a separate bowl.

Rinse and reuse the pan to make the sweet and sour sauce as given below.

How to make the sweet and sour sauce.

To a medium-sized cooking pan, add sugar(1/4 cup), vinegar(1/2 a cup), ketchup(1/3 cup), soy sauce(3 tbs), garlic(1 tbs), water(1/2 cup, if you’ve used canned pineapple then use the juice instead of the water).

Place the pan over low-medium fire, cook while whisking the ingredients to combine and melt.

While the sauce cooks over low heat, add water to a small bowl(4 tbs) and mix in the cornstarch(1 tbs) until smooth.

Add the cornstarch mixture to the cooking sauce, stir and cook for another 4 minutes until sauce slightly thickens.

Set aside until you have to combine the crispy chicken pieces.

How to make the crispy chicken for sweet and sour recipe.

Cut the boneless chicken into 1-inch cubes and make sure that they are pat to remove any excess water dry.

Add the cornflour(1/2 a cup) and salt(1/4 tsp) onto a large plate or tray that can hold the number of chicken cubes you are using.

If you are using your hands then wear disposable gloves to prepare the chicken cubes.

Or, use a zip lock bag to combine the cornflour with the chicken cubes.

Either way, use the best method to coat the chicken in cornflour.

How to deep fry chicken

Please be aware you will be checking on the frying chicken and batter coating them at the same time.


This means both your hands will be occupied so make sure the prep work mentioned above is done to ease this process.

Once you’ve coated the chicken pieces with cornflour, pour enough oil into a deep frying pan, and let the oil heat over low-medium heat.

While the oil heats, dip the chicken pieces into the whisked egg and then in the bowl of flour, and shake any excess flour.

Check if the oil has reached the correct temperature and then add the flour coated chicken pieces.

Fry the coated chicken pieces in batches of 3-5. “

Once they are fried transfer them onto a paper towel to remove any excess oil.

How to combine and make the sweet and sour chicken.

Place the pan with the sweet and sour sauce over the stove top.

The stove should be on low heat Once the sauce is warm, add the cooked pineapple and cook for a minute or two.

Taste the sauce and season appropriately. If you want to add extra sweetness then add in a little sugar.

Once you have the sweet and sour sauce flavor balanced, add the crispy chicken pieces.

Combine well and cook for a few minutes(1-2) and serve warm.
